Matthew 5:13-17, “Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.”
I love this passage of Scripture. Jesus said to let our “light” shine before men, that they may see our GOOD WORKS and glorify our heavenly Father. We hear so much preaching about not trusting in GOOD WORKS to be saved, but we don't hear enough about the need for every believe to do GOOD WORKS. Jesus said that He came not to destroy the Law, but TO FULFULL IT!
Jesus calls us “salt.” Salt makes people thirsty! That is why you'll usually see a snack machine next to a soda machine. The salty snacks make you thirsty for a drink. As believers Jesus said that we should live in such a manner that we are the SALT of the earth, making people thirst for the righteousness that we have of God. This is what the writer of Hebrews means in Hebrews 12:14, “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:” We ought o let OUR LIGHT SHINE to the darkened world around us, always doing GOOD WORKS that God may be glorified.
A city up on a hill cannot be hid. Men do not light a candle, and then hide it under a bail of hay, they set that lit candle in a candlestick that it may light the entire room. Likewise, every saint out to let our light for Jesus shine. That is why I wear a “John 3:16” hat everywhere I go, to let the world know that I am not ashamed of my blessed Savior. I love to do good works. I love to say “Keep the change!” I love being generous everywhere I go. People say, “You must be a Christian!” I say, “Yes Sir” or “Yes Ma'am, I sure am!” So let your light shine before men, that they may see YOUR GOOD WORKS and glorify your Father which is in Heaven.
