John Calvin taught baptismal regeneration as the following quote shows:
“So then we must ever come to this point, that the Sacraments are effectual and that they are not trifling signs that vanish away in the air, but that the truth is always matched with them, because God who is faithful shows that he has not ordained anything in vain. And that is the reason why in Baptism we truly receive the forgiveness of sins, we are washed and cleansed with the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, we are renewed by the operation of his Holy Spirit.
And how so? Does a little water have such power when it is cast upon the head of a child? No. But because it is the will of our Lord Jesus Christ that the water should be a visible sign of his blood and of the Holy Spirit. Therefore baptism has that power and whatsoever is there set forth to the eye is forthwith accomplished in very deed.”
[John Calvin, 'Sermons on Deuteronomy,' p. 1244]I cannot warn everyone enough about John Calvin (1509-1564). Mr. Calvin was not a good man as a professed Christian. Calvin murdered 58 people for disagreeing with him on “Infant Baptism.” Ironically, Calvinists (i.e., the Lordship Salvation crowd) teach the lie that you are not really saved if your life hasn't changed. There's not a bigger lie you'll ever hear, than that your life must transform to prove you are God's child. What a cruel thing to tell someone! Eternal life is a free gift (Ephesians 2:8-9). I am so sick and tired of this Lordship Salvation mess (MP3 sermon clip by Pastor Jack Hyles).
Our text Bible verse says that Christ did NOT send the apostle Paul to water baptize anyone. That is simply because baptism has absolutely nothing to do with receiving the free gift of God! Getting dunked into a big bathtub doesn't make you a Christian! Oh how religion destroys people's lives. Getting baptized no more makes you a Christian, than walking into a garage makes you a car! The Holy Bible teaches we are saved by faith alone in the dear Son of God. 1st Corinthians 1:21, “For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.”
In the Gospel of John, we find the word “believe” mentioned 85 times, but there is no mention of turning from sins, being water baptized, or living the Christian life. John 20:31, “But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.” Where in the world does John MacArthur, Steve Pettit, Sam Horn, Ray Comfort, John Piper, Paul Washer and other theological reprobates, get the heretical idea that salvation requires more than to simply BELIEVE the Gospel? Matthew 7:15, “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.”
“Eternal life is free. Discipleship is immeasurably hard. The former is attained by faith alone, the latter by a faith that works... the former brings with it the righteousness of God so that a man is 'justified freely by his grace' (Romans 3:24). The latter develops a personal righteousness, based on good deeds, so that a man was also 'justified by works' (James 2:24). The former constituted the believer God's workmanship, the latter fulfilled the wonderful purpose for which he had been created. The former cost man nothing, the latter could cost him everything, including life itself.” —Hodges, Zane C. The Hungry Inherit. Moody Press, Inc., 1972 (p. 114, 115).
