Romans 3:19, “Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.” ... Romans 6:14-15, “For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.”
The preceding Bible verses speak of being UNDER THE LAW, and of others being UNDER GRACE. What does that mean? It means that the unsaved person (i.e., the lost man) is still under the dominion and curse of the law of God. The LAW of God (about 720 Old Testament commandments total) makes all men guilty. Romans 3:19-20, “Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.” This is such a wonderful passage of Scripture, so rich in doctrinal meaning. The PURPOSE of God's law in the Old Testament, is to be used as a measuring stick, by which when compared men fall short of the glory of God (which is absolute sinless perfection - Romans 3:23). I don't measure up and neither do you friend! We are all guilty 'Sinners In The Hands Of An Angry God,' as Pastor Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) is so famous for preaching. (Interestingly, a small pox inoculation killed Mr. Edwards!)
In sharp contrast, the Christian believer is UNDER GOD'S GRACE, which means we are no longer under the LAW. The born-again believer is now and forever under GOD'S SAVING GRACE, which is only through faith in Christ Jesus. Romans 6:14-15, “For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid.” No Christian has God's blessing and permission to sin, just because the LAW no longer has the power to condemn us (Romans 3:31). Albeit, no amount of sinning could ever jeopardize our POSITION in Christ as His redeemed child. Our CONDITION is determined by the daily choices we make, and what befalls us in life according to time and chance (Ecclesiastes 9:11); but our POSITION in Christ was forever settled the moment we were born-again!
Beware of many false prophets today (Ray Comfort, Paul Washer, John MacArthur, Kirk Cameron, Steve Pettit, Sam Horn, Marty Herron, Bob Jones University, Moody Bible Institute, John Piper, et cetera) who all teach that MORE is required than faith alone in the Gospel to be saved. According to all these men and institutions, you must “be willing to turn from your sins” to receive God's free gift of eternal life! They are preaching another Gospel! The unsaved man is under LAW, but the saved man is under GRACE! There is no in between. There is no “race to run” faithfully to the finish to obtain the “award” of Heaven (as Dr. Steve Pettit heretical teaches at BJU). Eternal life is a GIFT, not an AWARD!!! I love Dr. Pettit and the folks at Bob Jones University, but they have been deceived by the Devil concerning the Gospel, and the Bible! They promote dozens of corrupt Bible revisions from Hell! Right doctrine matters! Truth matters! The accuracy of the Gospel matters! The purity of God's inspired Word matters! I care, do you?
The unsaved person is still under GOD'S LAW, cursed to Hell for their sins; and they will die and go straight to Hell when they leave this life, unless they receive God's free gift of forgiveness and eternal life, through faith alone in the Lord Jesus Christ. John 3:18 warns that the unbeliever is CONDEMNED ALREADY. John 3:18, “He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” John 3:36 warns that the wrath of God abideth upon you Oh unbeliever! Please get saved while you still can.
